Testing system for inspecting convertible tops

Portfolio: Measurement and Test Engineering
Industries: Automotive

On behalf of Webasto-Edscha Cabrio GmbH, HEITEC implemented the electromechanical design and software development for two final inspection gauges for complete testing of the convertible top.

For this purpose, a casting mold the original size of the automobile was produced on which the complete convertible top system is mounted. Before installation, the soft tops are tested using around 50 measuring probes and two measuring lasers that are attached to the gauge and wired to a control cabinet. While the top moves, load cells serve to detect power consumption by the top and the forces during closure of the convertible-top compartment lid. Distance measurement is performed by means of KEYENCE sensors on the closed top. Once tolerances have been met, both the power consumption diagram and the values of the forces detected are stored in a local SQL database. HEITEC developed the necessary software using the LabView programming language as well as the GUI (graphical user interface) with user administration. To control the movement of the convertible top, a dead man’s switch is used as a joystick to guarantee operational safety.
