Industrial PC for industrial X-ray technology

HEITEC supports a leading company in industrial X-ray technology with inspection technology, as well as the design and integration of industrial computers for the customer's end application. The fully automated X-ray system X-rays aluminium rims immediately after production to detect inclusions and other defects. Damaged rims can thus be identified and sorted out. The X-ray system itself uses an industrial robot and a degradation-free detector in conjunction with state-of-the-art image analysis software. The robot grips the rim and holds it at defined angles in front of the sensor. This enables almost pseudo-error-free evaluation of the results, including stable image quality.

Realisation

The industrial PC preconfigured by HEITEC according to the customer's specifications analyses the individual X-ray images with a very powerful graphics card and other correspondingly high-performance components. This allows the images to be analysed almost in real time and significantly reduces cycle times during mass production.

As the customer's system is subject to constant further development in terms of throughput times and data quality, the demands on the industrial computer used are also constantly increasing. The computers to be supplied for each new generation are therefore always designed with very powerful components in order to keep cycle times low or reduce them.

In terms of technology, the decision was made in favour of a cost-optimised 19" industrial PC housing for the system solution, whose compact, robust structure is ideally suited to the demanding, highly available and high-precision application as well as the complex software requirements. However, some adaptations to the standard hardware were necessary in this case, e.g. the customer wanted additional interface cards for communication with the system. Better ventilation was achieved through special mounting of the graphics cards and additional housing fans. The housing was also designed to be EMC-tight in order to minimise the risk during approval and also during operation.
