Control electronics for HVDC system
HEITEC has developed and manufactured a complete system control solution for HVDC (high voltage direct current transmission) systems for one of its customers in the energy technology sector, which centrally controls power modules via fibre optic cables.Brief technical description

Realisation
A system for use in process control requires high performance, real-time capability, data throughput, reliability and robust thermal properties, which were incorporated into the design of all system elements from the outset. Aspects such as cost-optimised production of the overall solution or investment protection through longevity were also taken into account.
The development objectives included very high computing power, parameterisable control and regulation hardware and the simultaneous operability of a large number of power modules.
Various challenges were faced in the project. One of these was to ensure complete signal integrity at all times with a high data transmission rate. This results in very high amounts of heat that need to be dissipated from the system. Thanks to an innovative ventilation concept, which was verified and optimised through extensive thermal simulations, an almost ideal uniform distribution of the flow speed per slot could be achieved even if one fan failed. The electronics development, the housing concept and the highly effective EMC shielding solution could be realised under one roof at HEITEC, which meant that the project could be implemented cost-effectively within the set time frame. HEITEC was also able to realise the development and production of the associated highly complex electronic assemblies in-house.
